Information About Reed Lake

>In 1997, Reed Lake along with Chaplin and Old Wives Lake, was recognized as a Western Hemisphere Shorebird Reserve Network (WHSRN) site of "hemispheric" significance and as an Important Bird Area (IBA) in 1999 due to the high diversity and abundance of birds that are found in this area.

>This lake ranges in size from 42 to 56 square kilometers, depending on water levels, which is fed by intermittent and general spring run-off.

>Habitats of Reed Lake consist of saline waters, mudflats, cultivated land and native grassland.

>Approximately 250 species of birds have been recorded in the Reed Lake area.

>It is estimated that 30,000 Franklin Gulls use the lake during the breeding season.

>In the fall, it is estimated that 5,000 Tundra Swans (2.5% of the world's population) use Reed Lake as a resting area while traveling to their wintering grounds.

>Approximately 5,000 migratory and breeding Canvasback Ducks have been estimated to use this lake.

>Many of the shorebirds that migrate to or through the Reed Lake area come from as far south as Chile, Argentina and Peru.
