"The legend Near Dol is the Champ Dolent menhir. It is said that in these places a terrible battle was fought between two brothers and their armies.

It is also said that this fratricidal fight caused so much blood to flow that the waves poured out were enough to make the wheel of the mill in the valley turn.

Finally, it is said that the menhir would have risen from the earth to separate the two brothers and put an end to the massacre.

The variants The main variant is related to the direction of arrival of the menhir. Instead of rising from the earth, it sometimes falls from the sky. This meaning is not surprising since many megaliths are thrown or lost by devils and fairies.

Moreover, another legend, the details of which are now lost, tells that a saint brought it in her apron while spinning her distaff (I don't really see the connection either ...).

In our case some versions suggest that a divine intervention could be at the origin of the appearance of the menhir. Some texts specify that the two brothers are twins who did not know they were.

Belief Popular belief was that the menhir gradually sank into the earth and that the day when it disappeared the hour of doomsday would have come.

"La légende Près de Dol se trouve le menhir du Champ Dolent. On dit qu’en ces lieux, une terrible bataille fut livrée entre deux frères et leurs armées.

On dit aussi que ce combat fratricide fit couler tellement de sang que les flots versés suffirent à faire tourner la roue du moulin du vallon.

On dit enfin que le menhir serait sorti de terre pour séparer les deux frères et mit fin à l’hécatombe.

Les variantes La principale variante est liée au sens d’arrivée du menhir. Au lieu de sortir de terre, il tombe parfois du ciel. Ce sens n’est pas étonnant puisque nombre de mégalithes sont jetés ou perdus par diables et fées.

D’ailleurs une autre légende dont les détails sont aujourd’hui perdus conte qu’une sainte l’apporta dans son tablier en filant sa quenouille (moi non plus je ne vois pas trop le rapport…).

Dans notre cas certaines versions laissent supposer qu’une intervention divine pourrait être à l’origine de l’apparition du menhir. Certains textes précisent que les deux frères sont des jumeaux qui s’ignoraient l’être.

La croyance La croyance populaire voulait que le menhir s’enfonce progressivement en terre et que le jour où il disparaîtrait l’heure du jugement dernier serait venu.
