The History of the Chinese Pagoda
The hexagonal building, for which the material was brought from China, was erected in 1991 by Chinese construction workers. The pagoda is a gift from the Chinese community in Rotterdam on the occasion of the 650th anniversary of the city in 1990. At the time, ten percent of the migrants in Rotterdam were of Chinese descent.
Initially, the pagoda was to be located on Westersingel, but in consultation with the City Development Department, the Parkhaven was chosen at Drooglever Fortuynplein.
The structure was put into use by Mayor Peper on August 28, in the presence of the Ambassador of the People's Republic of China and a delegation from Shanghai, sister city of Rotterdam. Source: NRC
