Some sources refer to the company as the "Texas Land and Emigration Company". The marker is brief and to the point:
Site of the first agency, January, 1845, of the Texian Land and Emigration Company. Generally known as "Peters' Colony" in honor of William S. Peters who, under a colonization contract secured in 1841 from the Republic of Texas, introduced more than ten thousand settlers to 17 counties of North Texas.
-----
Turn to your left and you'll see Keenan Cemetery, named for the pioneers who arrived here before The Peters Colony was officially established. The Keenans and many of the families of area settlers can be found there, and their son, John, was the first child born in the area, and unfortunately, the first to pass on, as an infant.
