Ilfracombe is a small settlement originally known as Wellshot after the huge property which dominated the area. In the 1890s the town had three hotels each with its own dance hall, a soft drink maker, a coach builder, two general stores, a billiard saloon, a dressmaker, three commission agents, a couple of butchers, a baker and a saddler, now there is just the one hotel and the Post Office left.
The Ilfracombe LPO is open weekdays between 0900 and 1645, but closes for lunch from 1200 to 1300, services available include finance, identity and travel options.
