Loch Wharral is situated some 600 metres above the Angus glen of Clova within a south facing corrie. It is less known than the neighbouring Loch Brandy which lies just over a mile to the north-west, but shares many of the characteristics by being contained within a rocky corrie with steep west and north facing sides.

The loch is situated just over two miles to the north of the B955 road in the glen where a bulldozed track traverses the hillside to reach it at its most southern tip. Some limited parking spaces may be available at the roadside, otherwise the nearest car park is at the hamlet of Clova another two miles up the road where the track to Loch Brandy starts. Both lochs can be linked by a faint path along the moorland plateau at the top of the hillside.
