Ben Tirran is a mountain which is situated above the Angus glen of Clova on the Mounth plateau in the eastern Grampians. The summit is named The Goet, with Ben Tirran being a cairned point lower down to the south-west. The summit is the highest point of a vast area of high moorland that lies between the glens of Clova and Esk. It is marked by an Ordnance Survey trig pillar and a semi-circular stone-built shelter. At 2939 feet and 896 metres high, it is a Corbett, a Scottish mountain between 2500 and 3000 feet high. Its prime feature is Loch Wharral, a small loch contained within a rocky corrie to the west of the summit. The similar and better known Loch Brandy lies further north.
STEEPNESS: A stiff climb from Glen Clova all the way until the gradient eases towards the summit area.
TERRAIN: A combination of grass, heather and boggier patches higher up.
ACCESSIBILITY: Generally reached from the hamlet of Clova and its hotel which is three miles to the west. It can be reached via a nearly three mile walk along the B955 to the track up to Loch Wharral, or from the track at the hotel up to Loch Brandy. then eastwards across the high moorland. The summit is two and a half miles north from the nearest point of the road where there may be limited parking space.
NAVIGATION: Paths and tracks carved out of the hillside to both the lochs of Brandy and Wharral help navigation, but the paths become fainter the higher up the hillside. The relatively level summit area is just north of east from the bothy at Loch Wharral.
DANGER: Navigation in mist on the vast plateau area above the glen.
