An interesting view of the Tongariro National Park volcanoes and the traffic along the Desert Road can be enjoyed from the top of a hill that we call Old Trig Hill, beside the Desert Road. There is a signposted turnoff into the tussock where you can park your vehicle. A 4WD may be able to drive closer but park carefully, do not block the track or you might find your vehicle crushed by an Army tank!!

A rough track leads through the tussock and heather, keep on the track as the Kaimanawa Range side is Army Land. When you reach the hill, the hard part begins, climb up the side, on an unmarked track, and enjoy the stunning views from the top. Tiny little vehicles race along the busy Desert Road SH1 with the mountains filling the horizon. There may be snow in winter.

Wear sturdy footwear and bring warm clothing. This is a mountain area. Watch the weather.
