Once slated to become a condominium development, the Dagny Johnson Key Largo Hammock Botanical State Park located on upper Key Largo contains one of the largest tracts of West Indian tropical hardwood hammock in the United States. Saved from development by local resident Anna Dagny Johnson and now a state park named in her honor a citizen memorial plaque now sits at the entrance of the park.

Plaque reads as follows:

"In recognition of more than 25 years of relentless work
and constant vigilance by
ANNA DAGNY JOHNSON
whose efforts made it possible to preserve
for future generations
DAGNY JOHNSON KEY LARGO HAMMOCK
BOTANICAL STATE PARK
This fragile ecological treasure contains the largest remaining
fragments of tropical hardwood hammocks in the
continental United States. Home to many endangered and
threatened plant and animal species, preservation of this
habitat is also critical to the protection of the
Florida Keys coral reef ecosystem.
This marker is dedicated on behalf of the grateful
citizens of Florida, particularly those of the Upper Keys."

The park is home to 84 protected species of plants and animals, including wild cotton, mahogany mistletoe and the American crocodile.
