Une ancienne fontaine
Construite en 1509 après l'adduction d'eau de la source de Viade, elle s'appela d'abord fontaine de Vinory, nom du vieux quartier où elle se trouvait. En 1584, on délibéra de la surmonter d'un "beau Saint Jacques de pierre" sur un piédestal et de la baptiser du nom du saint patron de l'hôpital de la ville.

Le lavoir de Saint-Jacques
La fontaine lavoir actuelle édifiée par Louis Chaffard, maçon de la ville en 1851, présente un buffet d'eau surmonté d'un fronton sur un bassin de plan tréflé. Deux petits canons latéraux y déversent leur eau. On modeste lavoir couvert au bassin en pierre de taille semi-circulaire s'adosse à la fontaine.

Les lavoirs de quartier
Dans les années 1880, après le captage des eaux de Malafaire, il existait 8 lavoirs dans la ville et les nouveaux quartiers, fontaines-lavoirs ou lavoir de plus de 20 places construits pour la commodité des habitants : lavoir Saint Antoine (disparu), lavoir de Saint Jacques, lavoir Saint Pierre (disparu), lavoir Rézenin ou Résini, lavoir Notre Dame, lavoir Sainte Ursule (disparu), lavoir Balladier (disparu), lavoir des Aires (disparu)

An ancient fountain
Built in 1509 after the water supply from the Viade spring, it was first called the Vinory fountain, the name of the old quarter where it was located. In 1584, it was decided to surmount it with a "beautiful Saint Jacques de pierre" on a pedestal and to baptize it with the name of the patron saint of the city hospital.

The wash house of Saint-Jacques
The current washhouse fountain built by Louis Chaffard, city mason in 1851, has a water buffet topped with a pediment on a trefoil-shaped basin. Two small side cannons pour their water into it. There is a modest covered washhouse with a semi-circular freestone basin leaning against the fountain.

Neighborhood washhouses
In the 1880s, after the collection of water from Malafaire, there were 8 washhouses in the city and new districts, fountains-washhouses or washhouse with more than 20 places built for the convenience of the inhabitants: Saint Antoine washhouse (disappeared), washhouse Saint Jacques, Saint Pierre washhouse (disappeared), Rézenin or Résini washhouse, Notre Dame washhouse, Sainte Ursule washhouse (disappeared), Balladier washhouse (disappeared), Aires washhouse (disappeared)
