The original construction of the house is not documented but it happened between the 15th and the 16th centuries. Its first owner was Álvaro Mendes de Vasconcelos, known as the 4th "Morgado do Esporão" ("Morgado" is a Portuguese nobility title). He was close to the king of Portugal, D. João III, and served as ambassador in Madrid for 12 years. He negotiated with the Pope the establishment of the Inquisition in Portugal.
Along history the home was visited by many notables, often from the Royal family. It was used as a place to escape the plague, whenever the disease hit Lisbon.
It was purchased in 2015 to a Fernandes family and transformed into a luxury hotel.
When it was bought by the current owners the house had been vacant for about 40 years and it was in a poor condition. Accordingly to one of the architects in charge of the renovation, the house " "a folie of times and styles; roman axes, manueline arches, baroque frescoes, nineteenth-century ceilings and naïf landscapes, bonding peacefully together."
