A group wanting to bring awareness to the discrimination faced by African Americans, people of color and the LGBTQ community have painted a mural on the street in front of the OKC Police Dept.
Even with permission to paint this memorial, there was still an encounter between police and the volunteers, resulting in three of them arrested at the OKC Police Dept. for refusing to leave the station premises.

The mural/memorial is located on Shartel, near the OKC Police Dept. It is several blocks long and will include names of victims of police brutality and an LGBTQ rainbow. The mural is a voice for the community.

June 2020 was a month of protests in the Oklahoma City metro, as well as communities around the United States. Fires were started, rubber bullets flew, people got hurt, and businesses were destroyed by some of the protests. Organized marches and gatherings were meant to bring attention to the way that people of color and other minorities are treated by Law Enforcement Officers in the state of Oklahoma and in other cities.

This mural was a huge project, with help from many members of the community as a non-violent way to express their frustration and channel it into a beautiful memorial for all to appreciate.
