This pillar is situated on the Hill of Tillylair, a 248 metre height amidst a vast area of hilly forest extending west of the town of Banchory on the south side of the River Dee. The pillar lies on the south side of the forest, but views are restricted by the surrounding woodland. The pillar is in good condition, but ever threatened by falling trees.
STEEPNESS: Some climbing is required en-route but nothing serious.
TERRAIN: Grassy paths, some eroded, carved out of the woodland
ACCESSIBILITY: The nearest access point is at the Slewdrum Forest Car Park, around half a mile to the west. Many paths and tracks run through the forest, including the Deeside Way which passes by around half a mile to the north.
NAVIGATION: From the car park a path heads due east and follows the southern fringe of the forest, eventually passing by the pillar not far north of the farm of Tillylair.
DANGER: Fallen trees on the path create a hazard.
