Long Description:
Windmills have been an essential feature of this area in the past. Five of them stood near Borovnice village (formerly Grossborowitz), while a few other windmills were located in the surrounding municipalities. Only one of them, called Hackel's mill survived into the 20th century. It was still operational shortly after World War II, before owner Augustin Hackel and other local Sudetenland Germans were displaced in 1946. Borovnice was predominantly German by the end of the war.It was the last German-style windmill in Bohemia. The structure used a drawbar to rotate on a vertical axis against the wind. Unfortunately, the wind mill was during further years totally devastated.
In 2004, an association named "Vetrák Borovnice", which set out to restore the windmill according to old photos and documentation of the former Hackel's windmill. With a help of local authorities and a regional government they finally managed finished the construction of this working replica. On June 27, 2020 was the finished windmill inaugurated. The wooden structure has a floor plan measuring 5.6 x 5.3 metres. One side is wider by a staircase and a room for the mill operator. The mill is 11.2 metres in height and is propelled by a propeller nearly 16 metres in diameter. The windmill will serve also as a lookout tower. On the second floor, about eight meters above the ground, there is a view of the Giant Mountains as well as part of the Orlicke Mountains.
