Lubbock Avalanche-Journal"To call the four horse sculptures at Mackenzie Park paints isn’t funny.
But that’s what a caller did shortly before 9:45 a.m. Tuesday, explaining to police the works of art were covered in graffiti.
Randy Truesdell, community services director for Lubbock Parks and Recreation, said the sculptures were completed in 2002 by local artist Steve Teeters.
One of the horses was painted with spots all over it, while another one had “861” marked in gold paint on the rear end.
Sgt. Jonathan Stewart, a spokesman in the Lubbock police Neighborhood Services, unit, said he did not know what the numbers “861” could mean.
Stewart could not find a record of graffiti previously reported in the park in police records late Tuesday.
Truesdell said he does not expect the cost of removing the graffiti to be high.
He said a detergent-based cleaner will be used first on the metal sculptures, and then a solvent-based cleaner will be used if needed."
