In de Willem Vroesentuin te Gouda is in 1976 dit bronzen standbeeld van Leeu geplaatst, gemaakt door de kunstenaar Roel Bendijk.
Gheraert Leeu, (geboren te Gouda, omstreeks 1445/1450) was een Nederlandse drukker en uitgever. Voor de uitvinding van de boekdrukkunst, waren het in de middeleeuwen vooral monniken die letter voor letter de talloze handschriften vervaardigden. Met de uitvinding van de boekdrukkunst kwamen de eerst nog primitieve houten blokpersen en daarna drukpersen met losse letters, (circa 1445), waarmee boeken gedrukt konden worden. Gheraert Leeu had in zijn geboortestad zo'n drukkerij op de Markt. Op de avond voor Pinksteren in 1477, gaf hij zijn eerste boek uit getiteld: "Alle die epistelen ende ewangelien van den gheheelen iaere". Dit was naar alle waarschijnlijkheid tevens het eerste in Gouda op 'moderne wijze' gedrukte boek. Gheraert Leeu drukte in de periode dat hij in Gouda zijn drukkerij had (1477-1484) ca. 69 werken, wat een enorme prestatie is gezien het primitieve materiaal waarmee gewerkt werd. Daarbij zijn prachtige exemplaren, zodat Leeu tot de allerbelangrijkste vroege Nederlandse incunabeldrukkers gerekend kan worden. In 1484 vertrekt Gheraert Leeu naar Antwerpen, waar hij tijdens een ruzie met een van zijn letterstekers in 1492 dodelijk werd gewond en overleed.

This bronze statue of Leeu was placed in the Willem Vroesentuin in Gouda in 1976, made by the artist Roel Bendijk.
Gheraert Leeu, (born in Gouda, around 1445/1450) was a Dutch printer and publisher. Before the invention of the printing press, it was mainly monks in the Middle Ages who made the countless manuscripts letter by letter. With the invention of printing, the first primitive wooden block presses were introduced, followed by movable type printing presses (circa 1445), with which books could be printed. Gheraert Leeu had such a printing company on the Markt in his hometown. On the evening before Pentecost in 1477, he published his first book entitled "Alle die epistelen ende ewangelien van den gheheelen iaere". This was in all probability also the first book printed in a 'modern way' in Gouda. Gheraert Leeu printed about 69 works during the period that he had his printing business in Gouda (1477-1484), which is an enormous achievement given the primitive material used. In addition, there are beautiful copies, so that Leeu can be counted among the most important early Dutch incunabel printers. In 1484 Gheraert Leeu leaves for Antwerp, where he was fatally wounded and died in a quarrel with one of his typewriters in 1492.
