Het Fort benoorden Spaarndam werd aangelegd tussen 1885 en 1901 en is onderdeel van het westfront van de Stelling van Amsterdam. De forten waren bedoeld om met een onderwaterzetting van het gebied rondom de stelling tegen de vijand de accessen te verdedigen: Het doel van de positie was de afsluiting en de verdediging van het acces gevormd door den Slaperdijk met den Westlaan en den Straatweg op den Zuidelijken berm van de Slaperdijk. Tussen Spaarndam en de duinen is er slechts een smalle strook terrein om onder water te zetten.
In de keelkazematten stond flankgeschut opgesteld waarmee het terrein tot de naastgelegen forten bestreken kon worden. In de zuidelijke kazemat (richting Fort bezuiden Spaarndam) stonden twee 6 cm kanonnen. In de noordelijke kazemat stonden twee 10 cm kanonnen omdat het volgende fort (Fort Zuidwijkermeer) op grotere afstand lag en het Noordzeekanaal verdedigd werd. It has of 42 forts that are 10–15 km from the centre and lowlands, which can easily be flooded in time of war. The flooding was designed to give a depth of about 30 cm, too little for boats to cross. Any buildings within 1 km of the line had to be made of wood so that they could be burnt and the obstruction removed.
The Stelling van Amsterdam was constructed between 1880 and 1920. The invention of the aeroplane and tank made the forts obsolete almost as soon as they were finished. Many of the forts now are under the control of both the town councils and the nature department. They may be visited by the public, and admission is free on Monuments Day, the second Saturday in September.
