The DowntownTX website is a great resource in providing some background, as the National Register's Nomination Form says little other than noting this one as a contributor (as property #51) and erroneously (?) listing its street number as "39" and not 25-31 as seen on a Sanborn Map. It was built around 1916, after the fire, taking up about 8100 square feet of space. Besides L.O. Hammons, previous occupants were the Bluebonnet Confectionery, Denman Music, the Knights of Pythias (upstairs), Cardinal Shoe Store, International Fidelity Insurance, Civil Air Patrol, and the Beasley-Vaughan Drug Store.
