De Grote Kerk in Hoorn heeft in haar geschiedenis vele gedaanten gekend. Het eerste kerkgebouw op de plaats van de huidige Grote Kerk werd gesticht in 1369. Het was een eenvoudige houten kerk met rieten dak, gewijd aan de heiligen Cyriacus en Johannes de Doper. In 1405 werd het koor van de houten kerk vervangen door een nieuw stenen transept en koor. Later volgden nog diverse vergrotingen, waardoor het godshuis uitgroeide tot een imposant stenen kerkgebouw – twee keer zo groot als de huidige kerk – met een fraaie toren en een rijke inrichting.
In 1838 ging de middeleeuwse Grote Kerk jammerlijk in vlammen op. De brand was veroorzaakt door de onoplettendheid van een loodgieter die tussen de middag een brandende vuurpot in de dakgoot had laten staan. Van wat eens de trots was van de stad resteerde een ruïne. De kerk werd in 1842-‘44 in ingekorte vorm herbouwd naar ontwerp van de Haarlemse architect K.G. Zocher. Geheel volgens de mode van die tijd kreeg de voorgevel een neoclassicistisch aanzien met vier forse Ionische zuilen die een driehoekig fronton droegen. In 1878 sloeg het noodlot weer toe en brandde ook dit kerkgebouw af, nu na een blikseminslag in de toren.
In 1883 kwam de huidige Grote Kerk gereed. Deze kerk is in neo-renaissancestijl ontworpen door de architect Constantijn Muysken. De Grote Kerk heeft tot de sluiting in 1968 als Nederlands Hervormde kerk dienst gedaan. In de jaren zeventig dreigde sloop, maar door particulier initiatief is het gebouw in 1985 gerestaureerd en verbouwd. Het was daarmee één van de eerste kerken van Nederland die werd herbestemd, destijds een spraakmakend project. Het grootste deel van de kerk, het midden- en dwarsschip, werd verbouwd tot winkelcentrum, in de kap kwamen appartementen. De hoge ruimte van het middenschip werd dichtgezet met verdiepingsvloeren. Alleen de toren, als beeldbepalend element in de stad, bleef eigendom van de gemeente.

The Grote Kerk in Hoorn has known many guises in its history. The first church building on the site of the current Grote Kerk was founded in 1369. It was a simple wooden church with thatched roof, dedicated to Saints Cyriacus and John the Baptist. In 1405 the chancel of the wooden church was replaced by a new stone transept and choir. Later on, various enlargements followed, as a result of which the almshouse grew into an impressive stone church building - twice the size of the current church - with a beautiful tower and rich furnishings.
In 1838, the medieval Grote Kerk went up in flames. The fire was caused by the inattention of a plumber who left a burning brazier in the gutter at noon. What was once the pride of the city has remained in ruins. The church was rebuilt in a shortened form in 1842-44 to a design by the Haarlem architect K.G. Zocher. In keeping with the fashion of the time, the façade acquired a neoclassical appearance with four large Ionic columns bearing a triangular pediment. In 1878 tragedy struck again and this church building also burned down, this time after a lightning strike in the tower.
The current Grote Kerk was completed in 1883. This church was designed in neo-Renaissance style by the architect Constantijn Muysken. The Grote Kerk served as a Dutch Reformed Church until its closure in 1968. In the 1970s, demolition was imminent, but the building was restored and renovated in 1985 through private initiative. This made it one of the first churches in the Netherlands to be repurposed, a high-profile project at the time. Most of the church, the nave and transept, was converted into a shopping center, apartments were built in the roof. The high space of the nave was closed off with storey floors. Only the tower, as an iconic element in the city, remained the property of the municipality.
