This pillar is situated on the summit of Tom's Cairn, a 310 metre hill approximately halfway between the Aberdeenshire towns of Aboyne and Banchory. The hill occupies a prominent position between the valley of the River Dee to the north, and the Water of Feugh to the south. The pillar shares the summit area with the cairn, which lies some forty feet to the north. It is in good condition and has extensive views over the Aberdeenshire countryside, particularly to the north-west.
STEEPNESS: Moderately steep at the beginning of the path from the west, but gentler thereafter.
TERRAIN: Rutted, occasionally muddy path up through the woods, but on easy walking grass thereafter.
ACCESSIBILITY: A popular walking route is waymarked from the B976 road at Corsedardar a mile and a half to the west.
NAVIGATION: The well marked route makes navigation easy with a path all the way.
DANGER: None, apart from care needed on the steeper section at the beginning of the walk up through the woods at Corsedardar.
