24 Apr 1975Canyon's "newest" church was born on the frontier as one of the city's first churches during an era when baptismal services were conducted in creeks or in horsetanks.
The newest church home in Canyon is owned by the First Christian Church Congregation and first worship services were conducted in the sanctuary last Sunday morning, April 20. The church is located at 2011 4th Avenue and the congregation totalled 172 this month as Rev. Terry P. White, pastor, conducted the first services at the new site.
Rev. White, who has pastored the church here for 1 1/2 years, noted that the former home of the Central Church of Christ congregation was obtained by the First Christian Church for an outlay of $38,000, the former church site at 1719 5th Avenue, and a parsonage.
The congregation met at a wooden church site in the 900 block of 5th Avenue until 1930 with the exception 1914-1921 when union services were held with the Presbyterians. Ministers service the church prior to the razing of the wooden building in 1930 were Jessie B. Haston, J.S. Stockard, S.T. Shore, John D. White, J.J. Hutchison, J.Wilborn Rose, M.L. Howard, E.A. Osborne, M.H. Terry, Ed S. McKinney and A.K. Scott.
The second church home was a brick and mortar facility at 1719 5th Avenue which served the local congregation for 45 years.
