James W. Sligh served as Captain of Company F, 1st Michigan Engineers & Mechanics during the Civil War.He died of wounds received when the train he was on was derailed by Confederate forces. He was the only officer in the regiment killed during the war.

From Grand Rapids, Michigan, James enlisted at the organization of the regiment as a captain at the age of 39. He was commissioned on September 12, 1862. He died at Tullahoma, Tennessee, on November 15, 1863, when the train he was riding was derailed from the track by by a band of guerillas.
