The FAA requires every airport to operate and maintain a rotating beacon. The original 1974 beacon, installed when the airport opened, was a bit north of this location. This beacon was installed in 2009 and is now a central feature of Founder's Plaza, an airport observation area that is open to the public. Given the size and complexity of DFW, this beacon exists merely to satisfy regulations and far more sophisticated air navigation systems are in use here.
