We're still waiting for information about Vanessa Guillén's murder. As we know it, she was bludgeoned to death by another Fort Hood soldier, Aaron David Robinson, on April 22, 2020, the motive yet undisclosed. Assisted by his purported girlfriend, Cecily Anne Aguilar, Robinson dismembered, burned and buried Guillén's remains, and they were found along the Leon River by developers on June 30. When authorities approached Robinson for questioning on July 1, he committed suicide with a handgun, leaving Aguilar to face the music alone. Apparently, Robinson had confided to her about the murder, and we'll have to wait to see what facts reveal themselves in the coming days.

As a response, local artist and Army Reservists, Juan Velázquez, decided to paint a mural of Guillén. The effort required $600 worth of paint -- some done with a brush, some with cans -- and ten hours of labor, with Velázquez assisted by at least twenty other local artists. The mural is fifty feet wide and twenty five fee tall, its centerpiece based on a photo of Vanessa Guillén in her military fatigues with "Guillen" and "U.S. Army" on opposite sides. The background is yellow, and Vanessa is surrounded by purple, red, and blue flowers, with "@Velazquez_Art" in black below the flowers on Vanessa's proper right side. On her proper left side, just on the other side of the flowers, is a colorful image of Our Lady of Guadalupe, her light blue robe with a gold lining, covered with stars, as yellow-orange rays emanate through the purple aura around her. Just as Our Lady of Guadalupe is a symbol of cultural pride, the crossed flags of Mexico and the United States of America are a nod to Vanessa's Mexican-American heritage.
