The life-size piece depicts and Ojibwe in a freight canoe. It is one of several pieces scattered around the Nipigon area to display the water heritage of the region's indigenous peoples.

The canoeist is also a reference to the town's "Paddle to the Sea" interactive park.

The artist is unknown. Carving material appears to be white pine.
