Conde de Lemos is a title of Spanish nobility , linked to the Galician city of Monforte de Lemos . At first, the county of Lemos was linked to that of Trastamara and Sarria , and was non-hereditary. The county of Lemos as an autonomous, hereditary and perpetual title began in 1456 with Pedro Álvarez Osorio .

It has traditionally been linked to the Castro family , according to Manuel Murguía , an "almost royal" lineage and according to Hermida Balado, the only Galician lineage that could have given rise to a royal saga. 1 One of the various theories that investigate the origin of the Castro saga , refers us to the Castro de Castrojeriz as descendants of the king , García de Galicia , who died a prisoner in the castle of Luna in 1090. However, several modern genealogists, especially the medievalist Jaime de Salazar y Acha , consider that the Castros come from Fernando García de Hita, son of Count García Ordóñez and Infanta Mencía Garcés, legitimate daughter of King García Sánchez III of Pamplona .

It is one of the peerages most important in Spain, and was granted the grandeur of first class in 1520 by Emperor Carlos V .

The coat of arms of the Galician branch of the Castros were six roels of azure in silver field, which throughout the evolution of the family were complemented with others, such as the skinned wolves of the Osorio family.
