The Blue Spring State Park is located in Volusia County, Florida just west of Orange City. This park is home of the Blue Spring which is the headwaters of the Blue Spring Run that feeds into the St. Johns River. The Blue Spring Run empties between 70 - 102 million gallons of water into the St. Johns River daily. The Blue Spring Run is popular with canoe and kayak users with a designated area for their use. Further upstream near the spring head is a cordoned off area for swimmers. Boaters are only allowed on the St. Johns River portion of this area.
From mid November to early March the Blue Spring Run area of the confluence is closed off to all canoe and kayak use due to the area being designated as a manatee refuge. The West Indian Manatee migrates to this area due to the 72 degree temperature of the spring waters.
In the 1800's this area was known as Blue Spring Landing and was a major steamboat landing for those who traveled inland to Orange City. Later when the railroads became more prolific the landing saw less use and eventually was closed. Today it has dockage for river cruises and tours, as well as canoe and kayak rentals through private concessioners within the state park.
