The Canadian Escarpment is the geographical transition point between the level High Plains of the Llano Estacado and the surrounding rolling terrain. This historical marker, at a small rest stop on the east side of NM 104, describes a portion of the escarpment. The marker text is

CANADIAN ESCARPMENT

Prominent landform of northeastern New Mexico that extends for almost 100 miles between Las Vegas and Clayton. From this point, the grasslands of the High Plains reach northwestward to the foot of the Southern Rocky Mountains which rise to elevations of more than 13,000 feet. Elevation here 6,300 feet.

The reverse of the marker has the usual "Points of Interest" map.
