"The belfry of Mons is one of the most recent among the belfries of Belgium and France. This belfry, classified since January 15, 1936, falls under the major heritage of Wallonia1 and is one of the belfries of Belgium and France classified as a world heritage of Unesco since December 1, 1999. It is the only one in the country built in baroque style, measuring 87 meters, dominating the city of Mons, itself built on a hill.

It was Louis Ledoux who was the architect. He directed its work from 1662 until his death in 1667. The work was continued from 1667 to 1669 by Vincent Anthony. This belfry is a prestigious construction that was also used for uses such as firefighting or, during World War II, as a point from which warnings against bombardments were triggered.

The belfry of Mons does not have all the characteristics of belfries, such as the fact of containing a prison, premises housing the Justice, etc. but Hainaut is not a belfry region as characterized as further north in Belgian Flanders or French Flanders.

It houses a carillon of 49 bells.

From the top of the building, one can observe the battlefield of the Battle of Mons, the Borinage, the plain of Hate and the hills or witness mounds of the edges of this one, the cement factories and the slag heaps of the old coal mines of the Levant from Mons to Bray (Binche). "
