A donation box for 'Church Expenses' in the church of St Helen, Colne.
Alms boxes have been placed in churches for charitable donations since the middle ages. Later, sometimes in addition to, they were replaced by donation boxes for church expenses. Most surviving poor boxes date from the Elizabethan and Jacobean eras, although this example is probably 19th century, in a baroque revival style. Elaborately carved with vine leaves and grapes.
There is a slot in the lid for coins, and a keyhole on the front.
