The carving is in the trunk of an old cottonwood tree. It was originally located behind the church in a corner of the parking lot. the tree was hit by lightning and the stump, with the carving, was relocated to the front of the church yard, facing the plaza. The carving was made by Toby Avila in 1970. He used a kitchen knife to do the work.
