[EN] The Igloo is a work of art by Pekka Paikkari at Turku Puutori (market square). The work has been carried out on the walls of an air-conditioning booth built for the needs of a parking cave under the market square. Some of the booth walls are covered with white ceramic, which is “cracked” for cracks.
Paikkari implemented Iglu together with IDO's Ekenäs porcelain factory. A total of 80 square meters of clay tile was cast in whole pieces on the concrete floor of the factory warehouse and allowed to dry, causing it to crack as it shrank. The dried tiles were glazed at 1230 °C.
Iglu is one of the three “Clay in the City” works made for the Turku 2011 Capital of Culture year. The others are Karin Widnäs' Kimono and Kim Simonsson's Temple.
According to Paikkari, the work is the opposite of a traditional spherical igloo in its angularity. The natural cracking of the clay is related to the fracture of the ice at the time of ice departure.
[FIN] Iglu on Pekka Paikkarin taideteos Turun Puutorilla. Teos on toteutettu torin alla olevan pysäköintiluolan tarpeisiin rakennetun ilmastointikopin seiniin. Osa kopin seinistä on päällystetty valkoisella keramiikalla, joka on ”krakeloitunut” säröille.
Paikkari toteutti Iglun yhdessä IDO-yhtiön Tammisaaren posliinitehtaan kanssa. Yhteensä 80 neliömetriä savilaattaa valettiin kokonaisina kappaleina tehtaan varaston betonilattialle ja annettiin kuivua, jolloin se halkeili kutistuessaan. Kuivuneet laatat lasitettiin 1230 celsiusasteessa.
Iglu on yksi kolmesta Turku 2011 -kulttuuripääkaupunkivuodeksi toteutetusta ”Savi kaupungissa” -teoksesta. Muut ovat Karin Widnäsin Kimono ja Kim Simonssonin Temppeli.
Paikkarin mukaan teos on kulmikkuudessaan perinteisen pallomaisen iglun vastakohta. Saven luonnollinen halkeaminen on hänestä sukua jäiden lähdön yhteydessä tapahtuvalle jään murtumiselle.
