EN: The Saint-Matthiaschurch is a gothic church in the old center of Maastricht. In popular parlance, is also referred to as Saint Matthijs. The church is dedicated to the holy apostle Matthias. It is one of the four large Roman Catholic parish churches in the center of Maastricht. The first stone was laid on February 24, 1351. Because only the front of the church is visible from the Boschstraat, many people are mistaken about the size of the church. In the church are some beautiful stained glass windows, a statue of Mary Magdalene, a 15th century pieta, a Louis XIV pulpit, the enclosed porch from the former Augustinian church, an 18th century baptismal font, a Bivignat organ from 1809, a bell chair with sound and two modern bells from 1966. A small chapel has been established in the church dedicated to “Our Lady of Banneux”. According to a folk myth, the church was paid with the fine that shopkeepers in Boschstraat imposed on swearing people.
