Place des Arts is a complex of venues for the performing arts, cafes and a museum located just northeast of downtown Montreal. Conceived in the late 1950s, the first venue, Grande Salle (later renamed Salle Wilfrid-Pelletier and the building shown on the stamp) opened in 1963. Place des Arts is home to the Montreal Symphony Orchestra, Les Grands Ballets Canadiens and the Opéra de Montréal, among others.
The stamp is one of a set of five issued in 2006 honoring Canadian opera singers. Each design features a portrait of the subject(s) along with a stylized image of a venue with which they were associated. This particular stamp honors noted Canadian contralto Maureen Forrester who has performed all over the world and appeared on countless recordings. Although primarily known for oratorios, Handel and Bach arias and the works of Mahler, the versatile Forrester has performed in several operas including performances at the Place des Arts.
