From the local signage:
During the early settlement era of Ontario in the 19th century numerous sawmills were constructed, as they were cheap to build and could operate for short periods. In Nassagaweya, timber was sawn for local needs to replace settlers' original log buildings. Between 1835 and 1867, three separate mills operated in Hilton Falls on Sixteen Mile Creek.
