Pastor Gerardus Beernink (1875-1906) was the construction pastor of the new church. Gerard te Riele from Deventer was recruited as an architect. He also built an emergency church in the garden of the presbytery, which was used from 1888 to 1890 until the actual church could be put into use. The church is built in neo-gothic style and over the years has been provided with typical neo-gothic elements, such as sculptures from Mengelberg's studio. The tower is 79.2 meters high, making it the 25th place in the Netherlands.
The Lambertus Church was largely spared during the bombings on Hengelo during World War II, while the city center was largely destroyed by the Allied bombs. [2] The restoration of the church building lasted from 1948 to 1951.
The St Lambertus Church Restoration Foundation was established in 1997 and a restoration took place in February 2015? the anchoring of the spire was reinforced, the tower was given new wall anchors and the entire façade was re-attached. From 12 to 20 September 2015 the 125th anniversary of the Lambertus was celebrated. Fore more information (
