Een groot gedeelte van Hitland bestaat uit water. Het middengedeelte van Hitland is een veenweidegebied, met betrekkelijk smalle stukken weiland en daartussen brede sloten. Daarnaast zijn er veenputten en wielen. Een en ander trekt veel water- en weidevogels aan. Grutto, wulp, kievit, kluut, tureluur, plevier, stern, visdiefje en vooral ook de talrijke fazanten laten zich gemakkelijk zien. Ook aanwezig zijn de blauwborst en de schuwere rietvogels zoals de rietgors. Van de roofvogels vliegen er de buizerd en de torenvalk en, zij het zeldzamer, ransuilen.
Er zijn meerdere ooievaars nestpalen geplaatst waar elk jaar een broedparen nestelen.
Speciaal voor de vogelliefhebbers is er eind 2016 op verzoek van gebruikers van het Hitland gebied een nieuwe voorziening in Hitland-Zuid gerealiseerd: Het vogeluitkijkpunt. Vanaf een kleine uitkijktoren aan de rand van het vogelrustgebied in Hitland-Zuid kun je in alle rust meerdere vogels spotten.

A large part of Hitland consists of water. The central part of Hitland is a peat meadow area, with relatively narrow pieces of pasture and wide ditches in between. In addition, there are peat pits and wheels. This attracts many water and meadow birds. Black-tailed godwit, curlew, lapwing, avocet, redshank, plover, tern, common tern and especially the numerous pheasants are easy to spot. Also present are the bluethroat and the more shy reed birds such as the reed bunting. Of the birds of prey fly the buzzard and the kestrel and, albeit more rarely, long-eared owls.
Several storks have placed nesting posts where breeding pairs nest every year.
Specially for bird lovers, at the end of 2016, at the request of users of the Hitland area, a new facility was realized in Hitland-South: The Bird Viewpoint. From a small watchtower on the edge of the bird rest area in Hitland-South you can spot several birds.
