[EN] The Great Fire of Turku (Finnish: Turun palo and Swedish: Åbo brand) was a conflagration in the city of Turku; that is still the largest urban fire in the history of Finland and the Nordic countries.
The fires started burning on 4 September 1827 in burgher Carl Gustav Hellman’s house on the Aninkaistenmäki hill slightly before 9 p.m. The house had possibly been lit on fire by sparks flying from the chimney of a neighboring building. The fire quickly swept through the northern quarter, spread to the southern quarter and jumped the Aura River, setting the Cathedral Quarter on fire before midnight. By the next day, the fire had destroyed 75% of the city. Only 25% of the city was spared, mainly the western and southern portions. 11.000 people were left homeless.
Merchant Hellmann's house was large and housed more than 30 people. However, in the event of a fire, some were on their way to Sweden. As well as merchant Carl Gustav Hellman. The house was completely destroyed by fire and no similar house has been built on the site today. The large apartment building is in the same place and there is a memorial plaque on the sidewalk where this origin of Great Fire of Turku is mentioned and that this was Hellmann's house. The plaque is made of red stone and has texts in both Finnish and Swedish.
[FIN] Turun palo oli Turun kaupungin lähes kokonaan tiistaina 4. syyskuuta – keskiviikkona 5. syyskuuta 1827 tuhonnut kaupunkipalo. Suomen ja Pohjoismaiden historian suurin kaupunkipalo tuhosi kolme neljäsosaa kaupungista ja jätti kodittomiksi 11 000 turkulaista. Palo tuhosi yhden pohjoismaiden suurimmista keskiaikaisperäisistä kivikaupungeista.
Turku oli palon sattuessa Suomen suurin kaupunki, ja tulipalo oli Suomessa suuri kansallinen katastrofi. Palo sai alkunsa porvari Hellmanin talosta Aninkaistenmäellä vähän ennen yhdeksää illalla. Palo eteni nopeasti Pohjoisessa korttelissa, levisi Eteläkortteliin ja ylitti Aurajoen sytyttäen Kirkkokorttelin ennen puoltayötä. Vain yksi neljäsosa kaupungista, lähinnä kaupungin länsi- ja etelälaidoilla säilyi tulipalolta. Palo tuhosi kaupungin historiallisen keskustan mukaan lukien Turun tuomiokirkon ja Turun akatemiatalon, jotka säilyivät vain osittain. Verrattuna suuriin aineellisiin menetyksiin henkilövahingot olivat pienemmät, mutta palossa kuoli ja loukkaantui kuitenkin useita ihmisiä.
Kauppias Hellmannin talo oli suuri ja siinä asui yli 30 henkeä. Palon sattuessa osa oli kuitenkin matkalla Ruotsissa. Kuten myös kauppias Carl Gustav Hellman. Talo tuhoutui palossa täysin eikä nykyään paikalla ole rakennettuna vastaavanlaista taloa. Kookas kerrostalo on samalla paikalla ja sen jalkakäytävällä on muistolaatta missä mainitaan tämä Turun Palon alkupaikka ja että tässä oli Hellmannin talo. Muistolaatta on punaisesta kivestä tehty ja siinä on tekstit sekä suomeksi että ruotsiksi.
