An old bell yolk on display in St Michael's church, Wartnaby.
In 1969 the bells in the tower were renovated. There are two bells that hang in the bellcote, the oldest one dating from 1731. The second bell from Taylor of Loughborough is dated 1857. Whether the woodwork in the bellcote was renovated in 1857 is unknown.
This old yolk may not be the usual thing to be kept for display purposes, however there is a mildly amusing story behind it, and a brass plaque fixed to the artefact tells us:
THESE BELLS WERE RENOVATED IN SEPT. 1969
BY BOB SHEARS, LIONEL MOBBS, ERIC TWISELTON
AND BILL OSBORN, ALL OF NORTHAMPTON.
THE WORK WAS COMPLETED ONLY MINUTES BEFORE
A WEDDING TOOK PLACE AND THE MEN RANG
THE BELLS WHILST THEY WERE STILL UP IN
THE BELL TOWER.
In today's world, with H&S, this would never have been allowed to happen.
