The exact date of its foundation is not known, although its existence has been documented in documents since 1174. King Ferdinand II definitively established the area of ??his jurisdiction, and today those same limits are those that mark the municipality of Xunqueira.
Regarding the distribution of spaces, this monument is divided into two parts. First of all, the church, built during the Middle Ages. Secondly, the monastery, the cloister and the liturgical furniture, from more modern times. Today the church works as a parish temple and part of the monastery houses the town hall offices (where they can provide us with information on visits).
The church, declared a National Monument in 1980, has a basilica plan and is made up of three naves 30 m long. Its aesthetic is austere, simple, something characteristic of the Cistercian buildings. Even so, the capitals with history or decorated with plant motifs in the central nave are worth admiring. The north door, Romanesque, is also decorated with plant motifs. At the door of the sacristy we will find Ionic scrolls. It has a Romanesque stone altar. The main altarpiece (there are others in the side chapels), was made by Juan de Angés "El Mozo" and shows the crosses of Calatrava and Alcántara, the shield of the Congregation of Castile, the Ascension of Mary and various scenes from the life of Jesus.
The facade of the church is much later, since it was finished in 1801, date present in an inscription. It is neoclassical in style and houses an image of Saint Bernard. The bell tower is divided into two levels, the first one having a quadrangular plan and the upper one circular.
The monastery was Romanesque in its origins, but the current construction is later and was carried out between the 16th and 17th centuries. The cloister is its most interesting part. Its layout and aesthetics are simple, yet harmonious, which gives it an undeniable artistic value.
The coffered ceiling of the entrance has some curious caricatures, painted directly on the wood.

Today it houses the town hall offices.
