Not long ago, this hydrant was all orange, and it had probably been this way since the 1990s. In 2019,
Create Ardmore and the Ardmore Fire Department worked together on a beautification effort in which fire hydrants in the downtown Cultural Arts District -- a comparatively small number compared to the over 1600 hydrants that the Ardmore FD has to maintain throughout the area! -- would be given the glamour treatment. As the Ardmore FD requires that the hydrants have a specific color cap -- red, orange, green or blue -- to indicate how much water pressure each tank has behind it, they did the priming work, leaving local volunteers to use their imaginations and minimal guidelines in the effort.
The orange cap has been retained, with red and blue trim, but much of the hydrant is now a shiny red, with a significant portion of it white, decorated with colored gumballs. Portions of the outlet caps and the chains are trimmed in a brownish red with white detail, and "25" (cents) is on the front cap. Those silver crescents could be the coin slots, and the red operating nut is the knob you'll twist after coughing up your quarter. The dispensing chute is gray, with a blue gumball as your treat, and it looks like a couple of blue gumballs on the breaker ring.
