Die Gemeinde Loccum besaß ein eigenes Wappen, bis sie am 1. März 1974 mit vier weiteren Gemeinden in die neue Stadt Rehburg-Loccum eingegliedert wurde.
Der Namensursprung von Loccum wird im Namen Lucca gesehen. Es gab hier ein Adelsgeschlecht derer von Lucca, Erbauer der Luccaburg. Die Namensherkunft könnte im Slawischen liegen, wo Lucca als Ausdruck für 'Wiese' gedeutet werden kann. Es wird vermutet, dass sich hier im sächsischen Siedlungsraum um das 8. Jahrhundert slawischsprachige Wenden niederließen.

The origin of the name Loccum is seen in the name Lucca. There was a noble family from Lucca, builders of the Luccaburg. The origin of the name could be in Slavonic, where Lucca can be interpreted as an expression for 'meadow'. It is believed that Slavic-speaking Wends settled here in the Saxon settlement area around the 8th century.
