Listed in the book 1,000 Places to see before you die, The world as you've never seen it before, by Patricia Schultz, some of the "Must Do" is to hike some of the trails here in the area along the Appalachian Trail or drive the scenic 34 miles of Newfound Gap road that link Cherokee, North Carolina and Gatlinburg, Tennessee.

She must never have visited Roan Mountain State Park in Tennessee or hiked this section of the Appalachian Trail through Carvers Gap in North Carolina just a mile or so from here or enjoyed this scenic drive through the mountains of Tennessee and North Carolina. If she had, she would have written about it in her book, or add this scenic drive and hike to 1,000 more places to see before you get too old to enjoy them.

This highway overlook is the most photographed of two scenic view pull-overs near the top of the mountain before you reach Carvers Gap where the Appalachian Trail crosses at the Tennessee/North Carolina State line. There are no actual parking spaces here at the posted coordinates, only a pull-over for about two vehicles. There are several more places to park and walk to these scenic pull-overs to take in a longer view. There are no signage here at the pull-out overlooks, and the guardrails show recent vandalism, as does the North Carolina State welcome sign at the parking area in Carver's Gap. The view you are seeing is overlooking the town of Roan Mountain down in the valley and the far blue mountain in the background is Unicoi mountain and beyond. The three scenic view pictures if laced together would be a panoramic view of the area.

This winding steep uphill grade of TN 143 becomes NC 261 and a winding steep downhill grade that will take you through the scenic route to Burnsville, NC. Most tourist come here for the Rhododendron Gardens, but I enjoy the driving routes in the area.
