Over de spoorlijn: In 1884 werd mede op initiatief van de regionale textielfabrikanten een lokaalspoorlijn aangelegd tussen Hengelo en Winterswijk. Omdat de snelheid op een lokaalspoorlijn aanmerkelijk lager was dan die op de hoofdspoorlijnen was de aanleg van een lokaalspoorlijn veel goedkoper. De spoorlijn diende voornamelijk voor de aanvoer van de vele kolen die nodig waren voor de Twentse textielindustrie. Tot 1973 werd het traject door de Nederlandse Spoorwegen nog gebruikt voor goederenvervoer. Op 21 februari 1967 werd de stichting Museum Buurt Spoorweg (MBS) opgericht, eerst reed de MBS tussen Haaksbergen en Enschede, en vanaf 1975 tussen Haaksbergen en Boekelo.

Station Boekelo dateert uit 1883 en werd 1906 en 1911 vergroot. De Boekelosche Stoombleekerij had een eigen spooraansluiting in Boekelo. Het station werd gesloten voor reizigersvervoer op 3 oktober 1937 en voor goederenvervoer op 28 mei 1972. Daarna werd het door de MBS in gebruik genomen. Bij de overweg staat een klein gebouwtje. Hierin treft men het loket aan en huist de stationschef van Boekelo. Hij bedient onder andere het inrijsein en de handbediende overwegbomen. Dit station huisvest ook het museumdepot van de MBS. In een loods, van 100 meter lengte, liggen 4 sporen, waarop veel (veelal nog te restaureren) materieel staat. Ook ligt er een oude wagendraaischijf, hierop werden vroeger goederenwagens gedraaid om bij de fabrieken in de juiste richting te staan. Tot slot is er een replica van een Twentse zouttoren gebouwd, hierin is de lokale VVV gevestigd.

Here you will find the counter and the station master of Boekelo. It operates, among other things, the entry signal and the manually operated level barriers. This station also houses the museum depot of the MBS. In a warehouse of 100 meters in length, there are 4 tracks, on which there is a lot of equipment (often still to be restored). There is also an old wagon turntable, on which freight wagons used to be turned to stand in the right direction at the factories. Finally, a replica of a Twente salt tower has been built, which houses the local tourist information office.
