There are supposed to be twenty-one copies of "The Joy of Music" across the United States, but there are no signs nearby to indicate when this one was placed. A search of the Waymarking site turns up a few previously-submitted examples from across the country, and this is the 18th, as identified by the sculptor's signature and "18/21" on the flautist's upper right arm.
This is a cast of an original that was commissioned in 1989 for the Civic Center of Loveland, Colorado, which is Lundeen's hometown. "Joy of Music" was placed here to honor the talent of so many musicians, past, present, and future, who live and play here at Mozart Hall. Made of bronze, the five members of the group are life-size, surrounded by bushes, and they stand on a concrete base. They're all well-dressed, and their smiles indicate that they're enjoying themselves. The children are holding a music book -- there's nothing inside -- and they're singing animatedly. To their right is the flautist, to their left is the violinist, and the bass player behind them bears just a striking resemblance to Lundeen himself; the others are said to be inspired by friends and family.
