There is no indication as to why the family would note that this young man as their oldest -- this isn't unique, but it is rare -- but given his youthful age (15) at the time of his passing, this was probably an exceptionally tough loss. FamilySearch is unable to shed any light on his fate, while Findagrave indicates that there was another son, Joseph C. Sweeney, who is buried in the adjacent plot. A marble headstone marks young Clarence's final resting place, with a crown and cross and "Saviour lead me" at the top. The inscription reads:

Clarence Percy

Oldest Son of
E.B. & M.A.
Sweeney

Born
Mar. 21, 1885

Died
Oct. 10, 1900

Aged
15 Yrs., 6 Mo.
& 19 Days.

No more shall we hear
his merry voice
In earnestness or in
jest.
For he has crossed the
river,
And is now in the land
of the blest.

Blessed are the pure in heart
for they shall see God.

-----

On the reverse, a Holy Bible is between "In Memory of" and "Our Son" at the top of the headstone.

---

E.B. and M.A. Sweeney were Edwin Bates and Mattie Allison Sweeney. They are buried behind their oldest boy, and unfortunately, they outlived both of their sons by several decades.
