This river gauge can be found on a bridge over the Water of Mark, an extension of the River North Esk which flows up Glen Esk, the most easterly of the Angus Glens that burrow their way into the eastern Grampian Mountains from the lowland of Strathmore to the south.

The gauging station lies at the end of the twelve mile public road at the small settlement of Invermark where Glen Esk splits into the remote glens of Lee and Mark.
