Vanaf de 15e eeuw werden langs de rivier de Hollandsche IJssel in meerdere steenfabrieken IJsselstenen geproduceerd. Twee van de grootste en best bewaarde steenovens zijn nog steeds in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel terug te vinden. In 1964 sloot de laatste steenplaats in Nieuwerkerk, eigendom van de familie Mijnlieff. De locatie van dit bronzen beeld, ter nagedachtenis aan deze voor het dorp ooit zo belangrijke steenindustrie is niet geheel willekeurig, de naastgelegen bibliotheek is gevestigd in een replica van de boerderij "De Batavier" uit 1882 welke in bezit van dezelfde familie was.
De plaquette bij het standbeeld heeft als tekst:
"Uit klei van de Hollandsche IJssel werden ruim zes eeuwen lang stenen gebakken in vele open veldovens. Klein-Hitland sloot in 1964 als laatste steenplaats. In 1898 maakt Minca Bosch Reitz een beeld van een der stoere stenenkruisters, die in en rond de ovens het zware werk deden. Naar dit verloren gegane beeld maakte Loek Bos deze stenenkruister. Geschenk van HD Projectrealisatie B.V. 27 november 2009"

From the 15th century, Dutch Bricks were produced along the river Hollandsche IJssel in several brick factories. Two of the largest and best-preserved brick ovens can still be found in Nieuwerkerk aan den IJssel. In 1964, the last stone site in Nieuwerkerk, owned by the Mijnlieff family, closed. The location of this bronze statue, in memory of this stone industry that was once so important to the village, is not entirely arbitrary, the adjacent library is located in a replica of the farm "De Batavier" from 1882, which was owned by the same family.
The plaque at the statue has the text:
"For more than six centuries, bricks were fired from clay from the Hollandsche IJssel in many open field furnaces. Klein-Hitland was the last stone site to close in 1964. In 1898, Minca Bosch Reitz created a statue of one of the sturdy stone crosses that were used in and around the kilns. did heavy work. Loek Bos made this stone cross from this lost image.
