The river rises on the eastern side of the Great Dividing Range & flows through open pastoral country around the town of Braidwood. It then enters steep sided gorges before flowing past the city of Nowra then onto Shoalhaven Heads. It has numerous tributaries along its 327 kilometre length. It is dammed at the its confluence with the Kangaroo River & the impounded waters provide water for the City of Shoalhaven as well as Sydney.
When I visited today its mouth was about 300 metres wide following heavy rain over several months. The mouth is relatively shallow & in colonial times was referred to as shoals haven. It would be impossible to navigate today with a great many waves & turbulent waters.
You can walk to the mouth along 7 Mile Beach parking at the Surf Club or at the given coordinates & follow the well defined bush tracks.
