The Orense-Empalme station or simply Orense (in Galician : Ourense or Ourense-Empalme ) is the main railway station in the Spanish city of Orense . It is located at an important railway junction when the Monforte-Redondela and Zamora-La Coruña railway lines converge.
In 2017, it received 961,383 passengers, making it the Galicia station with the highest number of long-distance travelers
The station is located at an altitude of 133 meters on the routes of the following railway lines:
Conventional railway wide Monforte de Lemos-Redondela , kilometric point 46.
Conventional gauge railway line Zamora-La Coruña , kilometer point 248.90.
Furthermore the station will be integrated into the high - speed line Olmedo-Zamora-Galicia linking Galicia with the plateau and Santiago-Orense section which is operational since December 2011.
The arrival of the railway in Orense took place on June 18 , 1881 with the opening of the Vigo-Orense line. A three-axle steam engine and seven new wagons were in charge of opening the new station after five hours of travel. The Compañía del Ferrocarril de Medina a Zamora y de Orense a Vigo , or MZOV, established in 1880, was in charge of the works. On 1 December as as 1884this same company made the connection with Monforte de Lemos. In 1928, the serious economic problems suffered by the companies that managed the railroads in western Spain led the state to nationalize them and to merge them into the Compañía Nacional de los Ferrocarriles del Oeste .In 1941, Oeste would be integrated like the rest of the Spanish railway companies in RENFE . Much later was the link with the Meseta due to the great complexity of the works in the province of Zamora. Therefore it was not until the 1 of July of 1957 with the launch of the stretch Orense - Puebla de Sanabria that could complete the Zamora-La Coruña line.
Since December 31, 2004, Renfe Operadora has operated the line while Adif is the owner of the railway facilities.
The October to December of 2011 the Santiago de Compostela-opened Orense as part of future high - speed line Olmedo-Zamora-Galicia .
The building for travelers is composed of a central pavilion flanked by two two-story side annexes. The central part incorporates a large window. In general, the set shows sober and functional lines.
It is made up of three platforms, one on the side and two in the center, accessed by five tracks. The railway complex is completed with more tracks. Platform changes are made thanks to an underpass.
It has ticket sales, information point, cafeteria, bookshop and toilets. The entire enclosure is adapted for people with disabilities . Outside there is a parking lot, a taxi rank and a city bus stop.
